Quick answer
Need the filing plan, not just the reading assignment? Start with a plain-English authority checklist and transparent pricing.
FMCSA's MOTUS system changes how new carriers start authority applications and manage registration. The hard part is not one single screen. The hard part is the whole chain: Login.gov, identity verification, MOTUS profile setup, business details, and finally choosing the right Transportation Service Provider.
For a new trucking company, that is a lot of government machinery to touch without feeling like one wrong click will wreck the application. So we built MOTUS Co-Pilot: a step-by-step guide that keeps the customer in control while giving them plain-English instructions and a clear place to ask for help.
What MOTUS Co-Pilot is
MOTUS Co-Pilot is a guided session for carriers who need to get through the new MOTUS setup path. It is designed for the moment when a customer has paid for filing help or is ready to start an authority application, but still has to create or access their government account before we can work from the Transportation Service Provider side.
The tool walks through the process in the same order a carrier is likely to see it:
- Prepare email, phone, ID, business details, EIN or SSN decision, and payment method
- Open the official MOTUS site at motus.dot.gov
- Create or sign into Login.gov
- Complete identity proofing
- Return to MOTUS and accept the FMCSA rules of behavior
- Finish the MOTUS profile
- Start or link the regulated entity registration
- Designate Motorcarrier.ai as the Transportation Service Provider
- Tell our team the assignment is complete so fulfillment can move forward
Why carriers need help with MOTUS
MOTUS is supposed to modernize FMCSA registration. That is good in theory. In practice, it adds unfamiliar identity and account steps to a process that was already stressful for new carriers.
Truckers are not afraid of work. They are afraid of hidden government traps: entering the wrong legal name, locking themselves out of Login.gov, choosing the wrong company record, or failing to authorize the filing service they paid to help them. That fear is reasonable. The consequences of a bad setup can include delays, duplicate work, support tickets, or an application stuck before it really begins.
How the guided flow works
We built the Co-Pilot around the way people actually move through a difficult setup flow on a phone. It has a preflight checklist, saved progress, mobile-friendly step cards, and short instructions that say what screen to expect next.
Each step is broken into three simple parts:
- Expected screen: what the carrier should be looking at
- What to do: the next action in plain English
- Stop and ask for help if: the point where guessing becomes risky
The goal is not to make MOTUS feel fun. Let's not insult anyone. The goal is to make it feel survivable, predictable, and supported.
Turn the guide into a filing plan
Know what you need, what it costs, and what to file next.
We help new carriers get MC authority, USDOT, BOC-3, UCR, and startup compliance handled without the usual bureaucratic jump scares.
What we will not do
Some parts of MOTUS can be assisted. Some parts should never be outsourced. Login.gov is the applicant's government identity. That means we will not ask for:
- Login.gov passwords
- MFA or security codes
- Backup codes
- Identity proofing takeover
- Face scan or ID verification control
We can explain what a screen means. We can tell you when to stop. We can help you prepare business information. We can receive the Transportation Service Provider assignment after you designate us. But the government login and identity proofing stay with the applicant.
Designating Motorcarrier.ai as your TSP
The most important business handoff in this flow is the Transportation Service Provider designation. Once the applicant reaches that step in MOTUS, they need to choose the option to designate a provider and search for Motorcarrier.ai.
After the designation is complete, come back to Motorcarrier.ai and tell us the assignment is done. That lets our team pick up the application from the filing side instead of waiting around for a vague "I think I did it" email.
Frequently asked questions
Is MOTUS Co-Pilot the same as Login.gov?
No. Login.gov is the federal government's identity sign-in system. MOTUS Co-Pilot is Motorcarrier.ai's guide that helps you understand what to do before, during, and after the Login.gov and MOTUS setup steps.
Can Motorcarrier.ai complete Login.gov for me?
No. Login.gov identity verification must be completed by the applicant. We can guide you, but we will not collect your password, MFA code, backup codes, or take over your identity verification.
What if I get stuck?
Use the chat button inside the Co-Pilot. Otto can answer many MOTUS questions immediately, and the Motorcarrier.ai team can jump in when a human needs to take over.
Where do I start?
