Formula
How Fuel Surcharges Work
Surcharge/mi = (Current Price β Base Price) Γ· MPG
= ($3.89 β $1.20) Γ· 6
= $2.69 Γ· 6
= $0.448/mi
Base fuel price β the threshold price set in your contract. The industry standard is $1.20/gallon, but some contracts use $1.10 or a custom figure. No surcharge applies when fuel is at or below this price.
Standard MPG β most surcharge schedules assume 6 MPG regardless of your actual fuel economy. This is the DOE/industry standard divisor.
Current fuel price β typically the DOE weekly national average retail diesel price, published every Monday. Some contracts use regional averages instead.
